Past and Future Practical Solutions for Torsional Vibration Damping in Vehicle Industry

In addition to material and production costs, consumption emission limits, the requirements for performance, efficiency space utilization must be met when it comes design of today's internal combustion engines automotive industry. As a result, three new trends have been emerged (based on J. Pfleghaar B. Lohmann's paper in 2013): 1. downsizing: reduction engine size (number pistons stroke) fuel space-saving CO2 purposes, 2. downspeeding: speed save fuel, which necessarily entails significantly higher torques being generated transmitted engine, 3. turbo supercharging: increasing pressure compression ratio piston cylinder cover increased torque demand, is accompanied by NOx gas emissions. Due these trends, significant transverse, axial, torsional oscillations can occur engine's crankshaft. To avoid power loss fatigue due oscillations, vibration damper advised installed free end crankshaft or integrated into flywheel. This review focuses possible reasons vibrations, applied methods used dampen them, expected future trends.
